Questions
  • First
An early morning blaze in January 1925 destroyed R. A. Ross’ Monumental Works that was located at 1022 East Main Street in Berlin on property now owned by Carl Platt.  Fire which broke out shortly before 5 a.m. in the apartments of R. A. Ross, adjoining the monumental works, completely riddled the building and caused the loss of practically all the monuments and tombstones on the show room and work shop, and all the household furnishings except those of the front room.

A copy of the story from the Berlin Record is on file at BBHS.

Was that the end of the business?  What became of R. A. Ross?  A picture of the monument business appears in the 1908 “Old Home Week” souvenir book of Berlin.

  • Second
In June 1925 the barn, implement shed, bake house and wash housed of Irvin P. Walker of Brothersvalley Township burned down.  The barn was rebuilt and for many years Clyde H. Walker – a son – owned the farm.  Current owners are Mike and Valerie Baker.     A copy of the fire story appeared on the front page of the Berlin Record and is available at the BAHS.
